National Interest Demands Limited Voting Rights i.e. Limited Citizenship

The times are such that two of the most readily available things in the contemporary world are memes and Rights. Every country provides a number of rights to people but Political Rights is a special segment that is exclusively reserved for its ‘citizens,’ its nationals. They are the ones who have the right to decide the future of the country essentially by deciding who shall lead them and take the country to new heights that citizens have always aspired for. Presently one becomes the citizen of the country by virtue of birth or by the process of naturalization. That essentially means that to be a determining factor in the future of the country you only have to take birth there! And once you attain a certain age no other minimum qualification is required. Contemporary democracy coupled with the universal adult franchise has put up a system where everyone is having a right to choose the government even though he may not have even the bleakest idea about the power he wields and may be ready to trade fate of the nation inasmuch for a bottle of liquor.

It is an accepted fact that the majority of the population (a.k.a. our beloved citizens) is ignorant, selfish, uneducated and too much morally corrupt to take any important call. They do not have even the bleakest idea about the power that has been conferred upon them and this reason is solely good enough to snatch this power to determine away from them. Will you hand over an AK 47 rifle to a man who has no idea that it can cause massacre? The scenario we are talking about is no different other than the fact that a vote is much more powerful than any AK 47. Today a Mason is talking about the foreign policy of the country because someone told him few blatant lies and he believed them with all his heart and will vote on the basis of those lies because he was pleased that for the first time someone at least considered him worthy to talk to about it. A line of distinction has to be drawn between those who are the source of greatness for nation and who are residing there simply to earn livelihood.

We don’t allow anyone to be a Doctor even if he wishes to unless he has received adequate training and is qualified to enter the profession nor we allow anyone to represent any other person in the court of the law even after express authorization without a valid license to represent. I ask that, is the responsibility to decide the fate of the country any less significant than handling the life of a patient? Is anyone and everyone actually worthy of having this ‘right to choose’? You make him enter the examination to choose his own future and that of the nation without giving him even the most elementary information about the implications of the decision he is going to make. The reality is that most of the citizens of our country are either so uneducated that they can be fooled even with a candy by the candidates or they are so indifferent that they are hardly concerned by the fact that who comes into power and governs them.

The majority is so unqualified that they can be easily fooled by the Leaders to follow them by most idiotic means especially in this era when transmission of information is facilitated by Social media. Few days a message was making rounds on Whatsapp that Indian Supreme Court has ordered a poll for Ram Janmabhumi and that the poll’s result will be the decisive factor in the fate of Ram Mandir. The message also provided the link to the poll website! I feel that sheer understanding of beloved community and co-nationals demand that I should not disclose the number of people who had undertaken the poll and exercised another facet of Universal Adult Franchise in favor of their beloved Ram Mandir. These people are actually the ones who actually determine who governs you and me, they being the majority.

The majority of the citizen being stupid, ignorant, and negligent have brought such a despicable state of affairs that their decision easily overturns or rather outplays the decision of informed, smart and intelligent minority population which actually is capable and did make a decision that could have been in the national interest. Those who are even able to look beyond self-interest and do not take this process as a right but as an obligation upon them to choose a responsible leader are left furious and helpless. This also makes the job of the candidates much easier who instead of working hard, making realistic promises, thinking about national interest just have to spread lies, make false promises which they can never fulfill. The meritorious and deserving candidates are always outshined in this mob rule where no one considers their hard work, their vision or their ideas and is presumed that a rickshaw puller has an equal sense as a learned political science student.

To cure the situation what is needed is a bifurcation between citizens and residents. Residents would be the class which is made up of broad masses which would be just like the citizens but without this political right i.e. they will not have the right to choose their government. Now the most important factor here is not the division between the residents and citizens but how the transition can be made from the latter class to the former one. Any resident can become a citizen by getting special education and knowledge about the essential factors and spheres that are indispensable for making an informed choice or opinion in the politics of the nation. This special knowledge which would be a pre-requisite to be a citizen can either be made mandatory for everyone so that the whole population is educated or can be elective, i.e. can be taken by those who are actually willing to be a part of the decision making process. Though in a country where after including all the bogus voting the total vote cast is roughly 60%  and people are not willing to be a part of the decision making, making such special education mandatory is strongly advised against. Conferment of Citizenship would be a great honour and then even a citizen street sweeper will be respected more than a resident Mercedes owner.

There is an exigent need to impellent a system to change the existing state of affairs of the country where politicians are able to dupe the nation because of these weak links in the chain of selection. Certain minimum qualifications have to be prescribed apart from age (18, because age does not guarantee intelligence) and such people who unfortunately form a substantial number if not the majority will have to be totally eliminated from the process if the country has to make a final march towards greatness. This rule by the mob has driven our country astray and the fate of the country can never be left in the hands of non-deserving people.

The conundrum of free speech

‘ You've got a nerve, coming into this muhalla! I know you: my father knows you: everyone knows you're a Hindu!! ' screams the Midget Queen.  Boys in their school whites and snake buckle are joining in, 'Hindu! Hindu! Hindu! From his window Midget Queen’s father joins in, hurling abuses at the new target… ‘Mother rapers! Violator of our daughters…!’ and the schoolboys have begun to chant 'Ra-pist! Ra-pist! Ray-ray-ray-pist!' without really knowing what they're saying. Their victim, Lifafa Das is trying to get away but by now he is surrounded by voices filled with blood- This episode from Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children , placed in the turmoil and unrest of partition, portrays the complex magic of words. Words have strange power; they can stir emotions and cause commotions in turbulent times. And these are turbulent times. It seems as if speech has been given a free hand to prey on the life of heads that donned skullcaps, shoulders that were draped i...

Why you must read 'Sophie's World'

Most probably, the revelation of the full title of the book will be sufficient for some to grab a copy of it straightaway. Jostein Gaarder’s Sophie’s World: A Novel About the History of Philosophy is a Norwegian classic published in 1991. For those who do not find the idea of narrating the ‘history of philosophy’ in a ‘fiction novel’ compelling in itself and are still reading this blog; the book has a lot more to offer. Sophie’s World , as the name suggests, revolves around the events that take place in the life of 14 years old Sophie Amundsen as her 15 th birthday approaches. The book opens with the perplexed thoughts of Sophie when her friend suggests that the human mind is like an advanced computer; she wonders ‘surely a person is more than a piece of hardware?’ And then Gaarder knits a whole new world around her; I mean, he literally weaves a ‘new world’. In Sophie’s World, two threads run simultaneously. First, there is the story of Sophie & the mysterious Alberto Knox, fr...
