One of the first subjects that make way into our curriculum in the very early stage of our life is ‘Moral Science.’ I never found anything scientific in morals and I have tangible proof that neither the majority of my countrymen did. Also, being one of the subjects to which kids are introduced to in very early stage, it is also one of the first to be forgotten. This phenomenon has lead to a very sorry state of affairs which in my considerate opinion is an indication that it is ‘Armageddon’, not for humans but for humanity. Though there are a number of such instances I found these three recent instances particularly disturbing.
Holi with semen filled balloon in Delhi

First of all a very happy Holi to all and if you are lucky enough to be a girl then on the auspicious occasion of this festival you may be splashed with a water balloon filled with ‘semen’ because this is what is happening on sacred Hindu festival in Delhi. Female students and teachers have been targeted by hooligans on the campus of prestigious Delhi University with semen filled balloons. Protests erupted outside the headquarters of Delhi Police outlining the failure on their part in performing their duty and demanding security of women. To be honest, this is not just the failure of police only, it is a collective failure of the society as a whole instead of some particular department as they cannot look into the content of each and every balloon. Further, even if they somehow manage to do it, someone will surely claim it as the infringement of their beloved ‘Right to Privacy’, ‘Right to Religion’ as it would be an unreasonable restriction to not let them celebrate their festival freely.
Selfie with mob lynching
Another instance comes from “God’s own Country” which boasts of 100% literacy rate where a tribal man was lynched to death by a mob because he was stealing rice. Okay agreed, this is not something uncommon in this country we live in but what is uncommon is that bystanders instead of calling 100, saving the poor man from the wrath of people (who themselves never stole anything in their entire life) they took ‘selfie’ with him while he was beaten. He succumbed to his injuries and now lives in the memories of people and social media thanks to those precious selfies. Some may claim it to be another alleged failure of police which did not intervene in time, of the administration which could not provide the ration sanctioned by the government for such poor people.
Lascivious breastfeeding
The third and the last instance is different from the other two. Where the last two shows lack of values this one in stark contrast shows how ultra-sensitive we are when it comes to our values. This month the Malayalam women’s magazine ‘Grihalakshmi’ came up with a photograph of a woman breastfeeding her child as the cover photo. It bears a caption ‘Mothers tell Kerala, “please don’t stare, we need to breastfeed,” being a part of the ‘breastfeed freely’ campaign launched by the magazine earlier. The same state that appeared to be low on values on the previous occasion came to its senses somehow and a petition was filled immediately in the District Court under ‘Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.’ It has been alleged in the petition that the photo outrages the modesty of all the women and is lascivious. They somehow get a strong desire for sexual activity from this picture which was originally intended to send a message. The complainant claims that the photos appeals to prurient interests and hence degrades the dignity of womanhood.
All the above-stated instances though totally different from each other have one thing in common, ‘lack of conscience’ showing how corroded our society has become. The very thread by which the society is bound is seemingly losing its grip with the moral science fading away. We can always have the arguments that in the first case if police would have been alert then the hooligans would have been caught, in the case of tribal man a ‘suo moto’ cognizance has been taken by the High Court and in the third case the magazine is also receiving appreciation on social media but this does not explain why such activities are taking place at the first hand. Our life has turned into a competition of likes and views on social media which in the present case took primacy over the life of a guy. The Gen X has no value for the emotions of others and just for the sake of ‘adventurism’, they are throwing semen on girls as if an offspring will pop out of the balloon calling them daddy. There is something fundamentally wrong with us where our life is a turning into a journey into our materialistic dreams giving all the importance to ‘my-stuff.’
The man died, protestors will go away and if some sanity is still left in us then the complaint will be dismissed right away (Though sill no one will now dare to go bold with their freedom of speech and expression) but what will persist is our capacity to do such things and see such instances take place in front of our eyes. This selective use of consciousness is contributing immensely to the untimely death of humanity and some innocent humans too. Not much can be expected from the people who are corrupted by a corrupt education system that has been evolving for the past 70 years but somehow the globe still hangs and rotates on an invisible thread of faith and belief.
